Protecting your valuable possessions is always a challenge. This is a particular problem since burglaries constantly occur throughout the country with two million home burglaries reported every single year. To make sure nothing valuable is ever taken from you, you need to store them in a place where access is limited. In this case, nothing does the job better than home safes.
Today, there’s a wide variety of home safes available and shopping for the perfect one can be quite daunting. The key is to consider certain factors before making your final purchase decision.
Size and Type
The first thing you need to figure out is how big of a safe would you need for your home. This may depend on the spot where you intend to put the safe. Fortunately, home safes to come in a variety of sizes.
Aside from the size, you also need to consider if you would prefer a standard safe or a special type of safe. A standard safe can be placed inside your cabinet or even a shelf. If you are looking to store items you need to access or update regularly, it may be best to opt for this type of safe. Even better, install it at eye level so you don’t have to bend or reach high up every time you open it. If you are going to do this though, it may also be better to keep it somewhere enclosed so it is not in plain sight.
If you want a safe that’s practically invisible, you may prefer an in-floor safe. They are meant to be installed right into the floor of your home. The great thing about this is that you can cover the spot where it’s installed with a carpet or rug to further conceal it. However, because it’s installed in the floor, keep in mind you would have to bend down to access items in the safe. Perhaps, this is fine if you don’t plan to open the safe regularly. If you have items that need to be pulled out on a regular basis, you may be better off with a standard safe.
If you are looking for a safe that’s particularly hard to break into, consider going for a high security safe. This type of safe is designed to withstand attack from a wide variety of high-power tools. These include sledgehammers, disc cutters, power saws and even industrial grinders. No burglar would be able to successfully drill into this safe as it’s got multiple types of barriers. In case someone tries to force this safe open, it’s equipped with built in locking mechanisms that will kick into action. If you need to store jewelry and other valuables, choose this type of safe. It’s also perfect for protecting important documents, such as your passport, ID’s and insurance policies.
Just to take extra precaution, you may also want to consider getting a safe that is fireproof. This is so in case the unthinkable happens, you can be sure that the valuables you have stored in the safe would survive a fire.
Typically, a fireproof safe is designed to keep paper protected while maintaining an internal temperature below 350 degrees F for a certain period of time. Ideally, it is recommended that you go for a safe that is rated for at least one to two hours. This would give fire rescue just enough time to extinguish a home fire and make it safe for you to be reunited with your valuables inside the safe once again.
Type of Lock
Aside from considering the type of safe and type of fire protection you need, you also need to think about the type of lock you would want in your safe. Today, there are a couple of lock options available.
As always, you can opt for a dial combination. This type of lock comes with a set code and you need to contact your locksmith if it needs to be reset. If you have always struggled opening a dial combination lock in the past though, perhaps this is not the right kind of lock for you. Something you may find easier is the electronic push button lock. Instead of turning a dial several times, all you have to do is enter a code and the safe would open with a push of a button.
Don’t forget about these important factors when you shop for home safes. Take your time in going over all available options. Remember, you can never be too careful when it comes to security.
